The Hawaii Island Landscape Association (HILA) and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Cooperative Extension Service will host the third annual Landscape Management Conference and Trade Show on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

This year, Mauna Kea Resort Services joins HILA and UH as a conference sponsor.

This one-day educational event will focus on providing practical management tools for professional landscape gardeners. The conference is also open to the general public, said county extension agent Ty McDonald of the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Cooperative Extension Service.

With two tracks of educational sessions, attendees can choose individual classes in tree care (arborist), turf and ornamental plant management. The speaker lineup features local experts from the golf course, nursery and landscape industry, as well as the University of Hawaii.

Tree care topics include modern safety techniques for all tree workers, as well as climbers. Learn how water quality affects every facet of turf management.

Integrated pest management topics include identification and control of new insect pests in Hawaii; web-based resources for weed ID and control, and control recommendations for problem weeds in turf and ornamentals.

Topics related to soil and water include concepts in soil fertility; managing soils for a healthy and productive landscape; effect of soil-water-plant relationships on plant health and irrigation controllers; and irrigation programming for the future.

HILA is a nonprofit landscape association dedicated to the continued improvement of the landscape industry through education, certification and networking.

Continuing education units (CEU) will be available for LICTs (formerly CLT), pesticide applicators (HDOA) and certified arborists (ISA).

The Trade Show features products and services offered to Big Island landscapers from vendors such as Hawaii Grower Products, Kona Irrigation, Beachside Lighting, Down to Earth Distributors, and Crop Production Services. The show is expanding this year to include ornamental plant material offered by local nurseries including Hawaiian Sunshine Nursery, Kalaoa Gardens, Kalapana Tropicals, Mountain Meadows and Hawaiian Gardens.

Cost for the conference is $90 for HILA members and $110 for non-members. Lunch is included. For more information, to register, or to participate in the Trade Show, please contact McDonald at tym@hawii.edu or call 322-4884.
